Improving the Accuracy of the SUrface Mass balance of Antarctica

The Scientific question

It is currently chanllenging to describe snow accumulation in Antarctica. This question is critical because an increasing storage of snow in Antarctica would reduce the sea level rise. But what is actually going on? Does accumulation increase or is it reducing?

ASUMA (2014-2018), in a few words

ASUMA project is the French contribution to the international project ITASE, it aims at reducing uncertainties related to these issues. ASUMA traverse will take place in December 2016 in an area still largely unknown from a scientific point of view: This is a transition zone between the coast and the Antarctic plateau. The project aims at:

- * Collecting new clues about accumulation variations on Antarctic surface.
- * Studying snow physic, and the processes responsible for its spatial and temporal variations
- * Connecting field observations (measurements and samples collected during the raid) to satellite observations
